Author: Acne is a common problem, especially among adolescents but adult acne is also prevalent. Most commonly, acne are formed when oil glands present on the surface of the skin produce excessive sebum. Loss of self esteem and, social withdrawal are some of the consequences of a severe acne condition.
There are many over-the-counter topical products available for acne control. Topical acne treatments consist of creams, lotions and gels. An important ingredient of such products is benzoyl peroxide. It is found to be very effective in controlling acne but is harsh for the skin. It is advisable to consult a dermatologist before applying any over-the-counter product. Retinoid, salicylic acid, birth control pills, accutane are some proven acne medication. Diluted Tea tree oil, clove oil, lavender oil and other essential oils are also found to be effective in treating acne. There is no one Acne medication that will work on everyone. The reason is that causes of acne also vary from person to person.
However, proper skin care is the best acne control. Keeping the skin clean with gentle cleansers is the first thing that one should do. One should also use exfoliating products to remove the dead skin from the surface. This results in clean and glowing skin. It is always best to leave the acne alone and avoid pinching or squeezing it. Lastly, one should be very careful about what is being applied on the face. Any oil based cosmetics should be avoided if the skin is acne prone.
